The Real Deal
Review Date: 7/4/2006 Reviewer: Littlev93@Excite.Com
I have been amazed at how exaggerated and downright ridiculous some reviews of this place have been. Here is the real deal. I lived in Regents for about a year and a half, from 2003 to 2004. I was attending UCSD at the time. That being said, I am not a "noisy, dirty college student". We did not have a single party the entire time we lived there, and we did not know of any big, notable parties that went down either. In fact, I can't even recall a small one, although I'm sure they occured, just as they would in ANY other place you would live (college students or no college students). Overall, it was very quiet. Once we had about a dozen or so people over for poker. We were playing on the patio, and our neighbor above asked us to keep it down. I don't remember the exact time, but it was before midnight for sure. Either way, we obliged. That is the ONLY neighbor complaint we received the entire time. We visited the pool area often, as our room was among the closest to the area. It was never "overrun" by college students, as some reviews suggest. In fact, we were disappointed overall at the lack of people at the pool. When people did come out, there was never any problem. We met and talked with people who were adults that had no problem with us, and even played with children. At Regents, you can reserve the Cabana area by the pool and use it until the pool area is closed (10pm weekdays, 11pm weekends). Sometimes students would rent it out and have parties. But not the kind of huge parties you would associate with college. It was usually campus clubs (like bible studies or ethnicity/cultural clubs) that would do this. They were not parties that were advertised to the whole student body, but simply get-togethers or socials. Here is my point: THEY WERE NO LOUDER THAN WHEN FAMILIES WOULD RENT THEM OUT AND HAVE PARTIES FOR THEMSELVES! I can't recall ever being annoyed by the noise and we lived RIGHT NEXT TO THE AREA. Literally the first apartment, E102. The place was converted into condos and sold to individual owners. Since then, most college students have left, such as myself and my roommates. I was over there recently and the place looks even nicer than before. Still quiet as always. There as a period where there was noise from construction going on, but it was for the purpose of improving the place. The leasing office was always courteous to us and even delivered candy and a card on our birthdays! My three qualms with Regents are as follows: 1) It was a bit expensive 2) There is not much to do in La Jolla. 3) As a college student, I felt a bit out of place. It is definitely a yuppyish place (which is why I am amazed that some people have referred to it as a slum). As much as I enjoyed the luxury, I feel more at home in a place with more moderate accomodations in an area with more personality. Oh, one more thing. UCSD IS NOT A PARTY SCHOOL!!!!! That is another thing I was astonished by in the other reviews. There are more people in the library on the weekend than there are out having fun. I'm dead serious, ask anyone that has ever gone there. It is notorious for it's poor social scene. Many of the other people who have written reviews either had an insanely abnormal experience at Regents or are simply unhappy, snobby people with serious lying/exaggeration problems. I think the latter is probably the best guess. |
